Crab appetizer - Crab Tots

Here is a great recipe that the kids are sure to love. I personally like how these have so much crab in them rather than tasting like they’re filled with breading. The twist to this appetizer is that it is like a tater tot, only it’s a crab tot! Try it and let me know what you think!

This recipe makes about 80-100 crab tots so if you are looking for less tots you might want to consider cutting the recipe in half.

Ingredients:

1.5 lb crab meat

1 lb shrimp

1 lb cream cheese

1/4 cup heavy cream

3 tablespoons of minced garlic

1/4 cup chopped cilantro

1/4 cup chopped green onion

3 lbs of frozen hashbrown potatoes (shredded)

3 cups of bread crumbs

1 tsp tabasco sauce

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 tablespoon chipotle pepper puree

Now you’re ready to get started.

You want to make sure that you soften the cream cheese so that it is easier to work… try placing it out at room temperature for maybe a half hour or a little longer before starting the crab tots. Once the cream cheese is softened, blend it until it is smooth. Then you will fold in all of the ingredients into the cream cheese. Mold the crab mixture into one inch balls. You can even work the ball into a tater tot shape if you wish but it really doesn’t matter because they still taste the same :-)

After you have the crab balls formed, refrigerate them for 1-2 hours. After they’re chilled, go ahead and deep fry them. If you don’t want to deep fry, try drizzling them with oil of your choice and baking them for 10-12 minutes at 400 degrees F.

That’s it! Try serving them with whatever dipping sauce you wish. You might want to try either melted butter (yum) or tartar sauce or even a cocktail type sauce.
